Children should be evaluated for orthodontic treatment around age 7. However, as a pediatric dentist in Decatur, IL, I monitor their oral development from the very first visit and can intervene if problems arise, such as:

  • Arch Overcrowding
  • Premature Tooth Loss
  • Jaw Joint Issues

A Healthy, Beautiful Smile: About Our Orthodontic Options

My dental team and I offer general orthodontics, interceptive orthodontics, and Invisalign® Teen.

Interceptive orthodontics may include:

  • Spacers: These are often placed before orthodontics; they create space between teeth.
  • Palatal Expanders: Expanders create space in the palate to combat overcrowded teeth. In some cases, expanders can reduce the need for braces later or shorten the time your child spends in treatment.

Traditional orthodontics (or bracket braces) are ideal for children with overlapping teeth, bite issues, and other orthodontic concerns.

Invisalign Teen works well for older kids seeking a discreet orthodontic experience. The system relies on clear aligners that are changed every few weeks. Teens can remove these aligners to eat and enjoy meals, so there are no restrictions on what they can eat.

All orthodontic treatment should be followed with a custom retainer. It’s vital to wear the retainer as directed by my dental office to prevent orthodontic relapse and alignment complications.

I will evaluate your child or teen and discuss all findings, including how they might benefit from treatment. I also welcome your questions and am happy to address your concerns.

Remember, orthodontics is about more than smile aesthetics. Bite alignment and proper spacing contribute to healthier teeth and long-term support for the jaw joints.
