 Welcome to our teen section of Jerger Pediatric Dentisty Website. Teenage needs and concerns are very different than what we would find with our younger patients. A main concern is the color of the teeth-how to make them whiter. At home there are many things teens can do to try to control staining on the teeth. Coffee, tea, soda pop, juices and other foods and beverages containing caffeine are major contributors to staining. Besides trying to cut down the usage of these foods and drinks, patients can also use straws while drinking teas or sodas to cut down on staining. Bleaching is available at our office. We have professional strength Crest Whitening Strips, and also bleaching trays. Trays are a custom fit to the patient's mouth and are worn at night.
Many teens also find themselves fighting cavities in between the teeth. Make sure to floss every day and cut down on drinking soda. Remember that frequency is the main contributing factor to decay. Instead of sipping on soda continually during the day make sure to sit down, drink it, and be done with it. Wisdom teeth also erupt during the late teens to early twenties. Make sure to reach these back teeth and consult with the dentist about possible extraction. Most people do not keep their wisdom teeth due to crowding and difficulty to properly clean.
Many teens also find their teeth shifting as they grow older after braces. Continue wearing retainers nightly to ensure that the teeth do not shift after braces. Older patients that have experienced shifting or may be interested in straightening their teeth for the first time may be interested in our Invisalign braces.
